Trekking in Ooty

Ooty is a paradise to the tourists due to the hilly terrain and vivid greens that support adventurous and exciting activities like trekking and camping. The Nilgiris have several peaks with beautiful and exciting trek routes and camping sites. These routes and locations offer a wonderful time to the tourists and bring them back again for more. Thick jungles, loose soil, small lanes and sparkling streams wonderfully pace up to trekker’s curiosity and enthusiasm. Below are four popular trek routes of Ooty.

Treks in Kotagiri

KotagiriKotagiri has three trek routes, ideal for trekking in the months from October to May. The first trail, Kotagiri – Kodanad is a moderate difficult trek that prolongs 20 Kms. It may take 6-8 hours to cover this route and reach Kodanad view Point. This stretch allows a fantastic sight of Moyar River, tea estates and meadows parallel to the road taken. Camp here for a night before taking up the next trail.

Second trekking trail, Kotagiri and St. Catherine Falls trek route is just 8 Km long and can be completed with ease in about 2-3 hours. Catherine falls and Elk falls are two refreshing stop-overs of the route.

The third trek, Kotagiri - Longwood Shola route is just a very small hiking distance of only 3 Kms that may take about an hour to complete. Move on Milidhane road to arrive at Shola forest, which is sure to please you with its interesting paths. The place also has a Rest House in the forest for an overnight halt.

Treks from Parson's Peak to Mudumalai National Park

This trek route is moderately difficulty trek that offers very beautiful sights of some unexplored locations of Nilgiri Mountains. The whole route is very ideal for hiking experiences. Best time to take a trek around this route is from June to February. The trekking and camping through this location can be completed in 3 parts.

Trek from Ooty to Porthimund - After a hiking of about 3 Kms from Ooty, head to the sign board showing Parson’s Peak. The peak is 8 Kms upwards towards the route. Once you are at the Parson’s valley after about 3 to 4 hours, the green grasslands could be seen all over. To reach Porthimund it takes another 4 hours where one can break for overnight.

Trekking in OotyPorthimund to Mukurthi Lake - Porthimund is a beautiful village lying between the valleys. While on your pathway, you pass through coffee and eucalyptus plantations. Mukurthi is 5 Kms further on the course. One reaches Mukurthi Lake and Mukurthi National Park happens to be adjacent this lake. Permission would be required from authorities to enter National Park and to camp at the premises of the Electric Department Bungalow. From Mukurthi take to north and one reaches Pandiar Hills. This is an excellent camping site to spend a night. Next day, you can take the route to Pykara falls. Further north lies the Madumalai National Park. The thickly covered forest has bamboo, teak and sandalwood and is a habitat to a lot of birds and animals.

Trek from Coonoor, Lamb's Rock to the Droog

Droog FortAn ideal time to trek into this route is from April to June and September to October. Initiate the trek at state highway from middle of Conoor towards south-west. Just 9 Kms ahead is the Lovely Lamb’s Rock. From here one can have a glimpse of beautiful greens of tea and coffee gardens of Coimbatore. 3 kms further lies the Dolphin’s Nose. Enroute is The Lady Canning's Seat is that offers a spectacular sight of Nilgiris. Dolphin’s nose is a rock shaped like that of a Dolphin’s snout.Catherine Falls are as well visible from this point. After taking a breather, head back towards Conoor. Take a small deviation of 5 Kms along Mettupalayam Road to Law’s Falls, lying at the junction of Conoor and Katteri streams. After the dazzler vision of these falls turn to the route of Droog or Pakkasuran Kottai, 13 Kms away. This is a torn Down fort of Tipu Sultan. The place is also noticed for rare medicinal plants. Head back 2 kms downwards and catch a bus to Conoor or walk back to terminate the journey. 

Ooty-Avalanche Trek

This is another lovable hiking route of Ooty. Start the hike at Madurai road and take a road towards Red Hills. Passing by Pallad, Ithalar and tantalizing grass fields the beautiful Emerald Town is reached. The town has eight wonderful lakes perfect for an overnight camping. After a night’s camping, set your direction to south to reach Avalanche Lake 12 Kms from Emerald Town. This is a nice walk amidst the trees, rhododendrons, orchids, magnolias and a small stream. One can camp here to spend the night. You can hike back to Ooty or take a bus to complete the trip.
