Ooty, the most Popular Hill station of Nilgiri Mountains sees the maximum number of footfalls than any other hill station of South India. The Hills attract the interest of tourists for its diversified tourism options.   Here is a list of few prominent tourist attractions in Ooty.

Botanical Gardens

Botanical Gardens in OotyThe Government Botanical Gardens of Ooty are maintained by the Department of Horticulture of Tamil Nadu. The gardens were laid out in 1847 covering an area of 55 acres of land. These gardens breed some 100 species of plants, shrubs, trees and bonsai. There are strangest of the trees existent here, like a cork tree (the only one in India), monkey puzzle  tree (that a monkey cannot ever climb). The garden has many lawns, ponds of lilies and many medicinal plants.  The gardens have six beautiful bifurcations viz. Lower Gardens, New Garden, Italian Garden, Conservatory, Nursery, display of fossil tree trunk, Toda Mund and Arboretum. A flower show is held every year in the month of May to showcase these rare and beautiful plants.

Ooty Lake

Tourist Places in OotyOoty Lake is the most important tourist location of Ooty, bounded by beautiful Eucalyptus trees. The Lake is close at hand from the main bus stand of Ooty. The lake was artificially created by damming the streams of Ooty valley. The hill town’s popular lake was constructed by John Sullivan in 1824.The possession of lake shifted to Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation in 1973. Boating, a mini train and an amusement park is prominent attraction of the lake. The boat house indulges the visitors into entertainment activities. There is a mini garden and a deer park also proximate to the lake for a visit.

Rose Garden

The rose Gardens, also known as Govt. Rose Gardens, are very famous gardens located at 1 km from Charring Cross town center. The garden stands on the Elk Hills that is at an altitude of 2200 Kms. The gardens breed some 20000 varieties of rose plants. It is counted amongst the best rose gardens of South Asia. The 4 hectare massive land is beautifully arranged and is maintained by Tamil Nadu Horticulture Department. The varieties of roses that exist here are assembled from all around the world and the climate conditions of Ooty allow the roses to blossom with complete vivacity.   The spectacular gardens also hold some of the rarest varieties like green rose and black rose.

Doddabetta Peak

Dodabetta PeakDoddabetta is an important visitor’s destination of Ooty, presumably because, it is the highest peak of Nilgiris and second highest in South India. The peak is at an altitude of 8650 feet, lying at the confluence of Eastern Ghats and Western Ghats, at a distance of 10 Kms from Ooty on Kotagiri road. Doddabetta peak derives its name from the tribe Dodda that is inhabitant in the region.  On a clear day, from Doddabetta peak, one can have a fantastic vista of the plains of Coimbatore plateau and Chamundi Hills. Climbing up this mountain is definitely a thrilling experience and gives a close flick with bushes, greens and woods. Two telescope houses are set up here on the peak, by TamilNadu Tourism Development Corporation, for an aerial view of the surrounding places from here. This observatory was set up in 1983, since then the Telescope house attracts a large number of tourists.

Pykara Lake

Pykara Falls lie at 19 Kms from Ooty. The water flows through a continual series of cascading rocks, into a bowl shaped green valley.The roads leading to the falls are led through beautiful forests. Toda tribe considers the river sacred. The last 2 falls of the cascades are 55 m and 61 m in height. Apart from the green meadows and wildlife habitat, the Boat House and a dam are also favorite spots for the visitors.

Avalanche Lake Ooty

The lake is called Avalanche after the landslides of 1823. The lake is about 31 Kms from Ooty with mesmerizing Blue Mountains and breathtaking streams and lakes. The mesmerizing lake has breathtaking surroundings and wonderful flowers. There are quite a few activities like trekking, rappelling, camping, fishing; horse riding one can undertake to engage oneself. You can visit Golden Pond and Emerald Lake also amongst from here.

Emerald Lake

This Lake is in Emerald Village and is known for the fishes, birds, amazing sunrise and sunset amidst the tea plantations.The village lies at the upper region of Nilgiris. One can enjoy specially flavored and fine varieties of tea. The sights of the lake are lush green around this silent valley. For tourists, trekking, fishing, bird-watching and boating are a few pleasure activities set here.

Pine Forest

Pine-ForestsThis is a pristine location in Thalakunda, where many Indian movies have been shot. The environs of the place are tranquil with a beautiful view of beautifully arranged, long standing pine trees all around. Even though naturally arranged, the trees stand in a conventionally neat order. Majority of trees are 15 to 45 meters in height. The trees of the forest is not only a few years old but are said to be existing since thousands of years. There are a variety of animals and birds resident in the forest. Bison and a unique variety of monkey can be easily encountered on your trip into these forests.

Dolphin’s Nose

This is a rock formation resembling a Dolphin’s nose. This hill top is covered with white clouds and surrounded by lush greens of tea plantations. Although it is a very tedious task to climb up the hill but the views are worth a watch. One can see Catherine falls cascading down the rocks and hiking, trekking, horse riding and boating are other adventurous activities to be undertaken.

Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary

Madumalai Wildlife ReserveThe Sanctuary lies to the Northwest of the Nilgiris. This is one of the oldest Sanctuaries accommodating varied, hills valleys, watercourses, ravines and swamps. One can spot Tigers, endangered elephants, Leopards, dog, hyena, jackal, sloth bear, Grey hornbill, crested hawk eagle and many such birds. The hilly terrains have moist deciduous forest hiking it more attractive.
